Accident Free Nation

Accident Free Nation – This is the time of youth action.

It is significant that a huge number of young people die every year in Tamil Nadu due to avoidable accidents. Tamil Nadu suffered around 15,600 deaths in 2015 alone and had the highest number of road accidents in India.

A true picture of drunken driving deaths is yet to emerge because of lack of good data; and the practice of officials in denying drunken driving as a cause for accidents (in order to claim insurance).

As a state with high alcohol consumption, driving while drunk is particularly a major menace to public safety in Tamil Nadu. With a few safe practices, many lives can be saved.

In order to raise awareness in Tamil Nadu, about the ill-effects of Drunken Driving,Thozhan launched the “CHEERS TO SAFETY” campaign in which 7 young volunteers of Thozhan cycled 800 kms, from Kanyakumari to Chennai, starting  29th January 2017 at Kanyakumari and ending in Chennai on Sunday,05 February 2017. In their course, they passed through Tirunelveli, Madurai, Trichy, Villupuram, and Chengalpet.

The volunteers are:

Mr.Saiyasodharan , Mr Senthamizh Anbu, Mr. Subbaiah, Mr Sathish Kumar

Mr Arun Prasad, Mr Nageshwara Babu, Mr Ashwin Kumar

In this arduous public campaign, these volunteers started each day at sun rise, and cycled a 100 kms a day to save so many lives lost unnecessarily. On the route, the group visited several schools and colleges; and interacted with the public to bring about awareness of drunken driving and road safety procedures.

05 Feb 2017, the volunteers reach Chennai, and end this part of their campaign in a function at Besant Nagar Beach. The function is presided over by Mr.Ponraj, who assisted our idol and former President, Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam. In connection with this event, Thozhan registers the following appeals to the state, central governments and educational institutions

  1. Please ban alcohol outlets within 500 metres of schools, colleges and major Highways
  2. Please include road safety programs as part of school curriculum, and make these certificate programs with practical training
  3. Please make sure young students do not drive vehicles without a driving license.
  4. Please make sure the insurance process is faster and more efficient for accidents

Thozhan will continue its campaigns for safer roads focusing on young citizens in particular.
