World kidney day

World kidney day (WKD) is observed in the second Thursday of March every year. The mission of WKD is to create awareness among people about the importance of kidneys to overall health. Majority of people with kidney disease are labelled as suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). CKD is a slowly progressive irreversible kidney disease. The main reasons for this CKD are Diabetes Mellitus (High Blood sugar) & Systemic Hypertension (High Blood Pressure). The kidney damage as a result of these diseases is slow and does not produce any problems till significant damage has already happened. At this point, there may not be a major reversal of the damage with treatment. Kidney diseases occur in both men & women, more or less equally. And women have unique predisposition to certain conditions that can affect the kidneys. Many of us may not know how much physical, mental & emotional changes a woman undergoes throughout her pregnancy. To nurture the little life, all her vital organs almost double their working capacity. And this makes them prone for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (high blood sugar in pregnancy) & Pregnancy induced hypertension. Women between 20 to 40 years are prone for auto-immune diseases (diseases where the immunity acts against our own body cells, tissues, organs). SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) is one such disease that can affect the kidneys and is of great concern. Middle – aged to elderly women can have kidney problems because of cancers affecting the birth canal. Vaccination and periodic Pap Smear Examination have a major role in prevention of this cancer.

Fundamental to the kidney health is awareness of the risk factors for kidney disease, which include

  1. High Blood sugar 2. High Blood Pressure 3. Renal Stone Disease 4. Family History of Kidney disease 5. Frequent and prolonged use of Pain Killers. Suggestive preventive actions include: Take less salt, Drink adequate water, optimize your weight and Have a Refreshing Sleep. Let’s INCLUDE, VALUE & EMPOWER our women for the wellness of the society.
