OPENING is the culmination of Youth for Seva’s and Lit the Light’s efforts throughout the month of October – World Sight Month, to augment the commitment of the citizens of Chennai city towards the visually impaired.
A large number of visually impaired students in Chennai city are struggling to cope with their academic subjects owing to the lack of support and a lack of awareness about their woes. Thozhan taken up the responsibility of enlightening the public on this issue.
Youth for Seva and Lit the Light are collectively conducted a mass reading session on 1st November 2015 at Presidency College, Chepauk, Chennai.. This effort is being supported by Madras Metro Round Table 95 and Madras Metro Ladies Circle 70.
The objective of this event is to create awareness about reading sessions that are conducted for the visually impaired students.
The event was staged for more than 120 First Time Readers to assist more than 120 visually impaired students.
They read books on positive attitude towards life and on inculcating positivism, and also recorded their voice for the students to listen whenever they want.
All the visually impaired students were given a copy of “Braille Book on Dr. Kalam” – the 1st ever Braille Book on Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
CHIEF GUEST Mr. Vijay Kumar, Professor in Presidency College (Department of English), gave a view that many of us are not aware of these things happening in Chennai. Helping such visually challenged people will take them to great heights. Spending at-least one or two hours per week with them will give them positive energy and help them go a long way.
The volunteer supporting organizations (Thozhan, Friends Foundation, CREW, BOSS, Vernalis and Team Bleed) has helped to make the campaign successful.
The coordinators of IOPENING reiterate the need for volunteers on a daily/ weekend basis, to cater to the needs of these students. Those interested to extend their services are requested to contact the organizations at the numbers below.
